Why we love Winter walks (and where to go)
Ah… Winter. It is a challenge, we can’t deny it. Challenging weather, short days, the feeling that there’s never quite enough light in the day. But that’s what makes getting outside for winter walks so rewarding. As well as the physical and mental health benefits that a few hours in the fresh air brings, there’s also that smug feeling when you return to your warm, cosy B&B to find a cup of tea and slice of homemade cake waiting for you.
That’s the great thing about the UK: it has an abundance of amazing countryside and coastlines to provide the best in wintry walks. And one of the great things about B&Bs is that you can pretty much guarantee that we’ll have a B&B for you, wherever you want to travel. We’ve got amazing B&Bs in Cornwall and the Cotswolds, Scotland and Wales, and many more besides. Oh and don’t forget, you can take your dog too, with our dog-friendly B&Bs.
Here’s what various parts of the UK can offer in terms of amazing winter walks:
Head north to Scotland, where stunning scenery that includes the Highlands, mountain ranges, large lochs and long rivers await. But what you might not expect to come across are Scotland’s sandy white beaches. Find the ten best here, courtesy of Countrylife Magazine. Or try Scotland’s Castle Trail, which guides you through 19 of Scotland’s 260 castles, stately homes and ruins, which are to be found in Aberdeenshire.
The South West Coast Path offers 630 miles of superb coastline and makes up the longest National Trail in the UK, with amazing heritage, wildlife, geology and scenery every step of the way. If 630 miles sound a bit much, try the Dorset Doddle (or part of it) which follows the coast path from Weymouth to Swanage for 32 miles.
We love the Gower Peninsula and the National Trust’s Gower walks guide has everything from coastal strolls to woodland rambles to help you find something you love.
Alternatively, head to the other side of the UK to follow in the footsteps of Constable in Suffolk, discover the spectacular coastline and big open skies of Norfolk, roam the fenland waterways of Cambridgeshire, or explore the hidden gems of Essex‘s healthland, wetland and woodland.
Whatever your walking style, and wherever you go, we know you’ll find a B&B you love to make winter walking a joy.
